Welcome to Dismayland (8 pieces)

Oh man, is that Minnie pissin' all over the sidewalk?! Welcome to Dismayland, definitely not the happiest place on Earth. Jeff Gillette's series places our favorite Disney characters outside their usual plushy confines, and instead relocates them in the decrepit conditions of third world countries. The paintings confront viewers with strong images and feature familiar characters living in the slums, laying haphazardly almost half-dead, or using the streets as their personal toilet.

Powerfully Loud – Minjae Lee (8 pieces)

Due to the amount of detail and variation in these images, it's easy to assume that these powerful female portraits were created using digital tools. You may be surprised to find out, however, that Minjae Lee, a self-taught 19-year old South Korean artist, uses old-fashioned tools like markers, pens, crayons, and acrylics to create these loud, powerful illustrations. “I have loved color since I was 7 year old,” Lee says.

Classic Books in Modern Covers (13 favorites)

While I first learned about Coralie Bickford-Smith's penguin cloth-bound classic series through Design*Sponge in October of 2009, I didn't feel compelled to write about it till I saw it pop up again on Very Short List this morning. As they're now selling these beautifully bound books at Anthropologie, I had a chance to really take a look at them and appreciate the careful design approach behind each.
