Colorful Reinterpretations of Cloudy Scottish Landscapes

Inspired by his surrounding Scottish landscapes, Glasgow-based artist Scott Naismith interprets the skies, land, and sea before him as beautiful streaks of color. Using multi-sized brushes and various palette knives, the painter expresses his love for his native countryside with a multi-layered melody of color. The use of multiple tools allows him to produce his desired texture and visual effect, further accentuating the lively, captivating setting.

The explosion of colors that are often present in Naismith's work are artistic renditions of light peeking through the clouds. He explains, “[M]y recent work now becomes more involved with cloudcover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere . They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour.”

The painter's bio also adds, “These changing skies from dark to light are a metaphor for optimism and hope. After a miraculous recovery from cancer by his father, recent marriage and birth of his 2 children, Scott draws upon a great positivity and energy.”
