Reference Books Are Carved and Cut Into Sculptures That Transform Knowledge Into Art

Artist Brian Dettmer transforms printed texts into awe-inspiring sculptures. Crafted through carving, Dettmer dives into existing books, often encyclopedias, atlases, or reference volumes, using knives and surgical tools. He does not add or rearrange content; instead, he removes material to expose images, diagrams, and fragments of text embedded within the pages. The resulting works resemble topographic reliefs or cross-sections of knowledge, where layers of information are uncovered through precise cuts.

Iconic ‘Rocky’ Statue Will Return to the Top of PMA’s Steps in Philadelphia

In the 1976 film Rocky, actor Sylvester Stallone, playing the eponymous boxer, races up the 72 stone steps to the east entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA). It’s one of the most iconic scenes in modern film history, and even led to the creation of a 9-foot-tall bronze sculpture in the 1980s. Now, after some debate, the original Rocky statue will soon return to the top of PMA’s steps.

Detroit’s Long-Awaited RoboCop Statue Is Finally Here

Back in 2011, fans of Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop (1987) launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a life-size statue of the iconic cyborg. Now, after 15 years of planning, casting, and repeated setbacks, the Detroit RoboCop statue is at last in place at Eastern Market. The original RoboCop film was set in a dystopian, near-future Detroit, making it the perfect location for the statue.
