Perfectly Symmetrical Paper Butterfly Installations

Paper art is a fascinating technique that requires a lot of patience and a lot of skill. Creative team Will & Caro, consisting of Australian-born Carolyn Wong and Finland-born William Du, are no strangers to this powerful artistic form. The two self-taught artists launched their first big project in December of 2009 and it was a great success.

Will & Caro create delicate pieces using mainly washi (Japanese paper), focusing on simple forms made with fragile material. Wong's intrigue with Japanese culture and Du's interest in movement and disorder are a perfect combination for their collaborative designs. Each piece features tiny paper butterflies, organized into perfectly symmetrical shapes that evoke a certain energy and life in the motionless forms. According to their website, “The inspiration lies behind nature in that it's design is both deliberate and effortless which is reminiscent in some ways of the life experiences unique to each individual.”

If you are interested in these delightfully fragile creations, you can check out Japanese artist Eiji Watanabe's different take on a similar subject, an installation entitled A Butterfly's Eye View.
