Seeing the Moon in the night sky is nothing new. You’ve undoubtedly witnessed Earth’s satellite countless times, but have you ever really looked at it? When you watch Wylie Overstreet and Alex Gorosh’s short film entitled A New View of the Moon, you’ll get the sense that maybe you don’t know it as well as you think you do. And once you look at it through the right lens, the celestial body is truly a sight to behold.
The three-minute-long video features Gorosh hauling his high-powered telescope onto the streets of Los Angeles. “One night I was bored in my apartment and decided to take my telescope out to the sidewalk,” he explains at the beginning of the film. Upon wheeling it out in public, curious people begin to approach him, and Gorosh invites them to take a peek into the viewfinder.
The passersby are left awe-struck by what they see. “Oh my god!” is the most popular response. “You can see the craters!” another viewer exclaims. “I’ve never seen this before,” someone else muses. It goes to show that despite the Moon being an ever-present part of our sky, it’s hard to fathom just what it looks like until you get an opportunity to see it through a high-powered telescope.
At the end of the film, Gorosh reflects on why people reacted in such an enthusiastic manner. “It makes you realize that we are all on a small little planet, and we all have the same reaction to the universes we live in,” he says. “It’s a reminder we should look up more often.”
