Interview: Daniel Kordan Uncovers Greenland’s Hidden Gems

Russian photographer Daniel Kordan recently returned from a sailing expedition to Greenland, bringing back with him dozens of gorgeous images that capture the beauty of the expanse between Saint Petersburg and Greenland. For several months, Kordan lived aboard a yacht out on the Atlantic, where he led photography workshops that took advantage of the spectacular natural surroundings.

Gyotaku: The Traditional Japanese Art of Painting Marine Life with Actual Fish

In her nature-inspired works of art, Heather Fortner not only depicts the forms of fish, but does so using the actual bodies of the fish. The technique is called gyotaku (? gyo “fish” + ? taku “rubbing”), a traditional Japanese method of fish printing that originated in the mid-19th century as a way for fishermen to record the size and characteristics of their daily catches.

Tucked away on quiet streets far from the hustle and bustle of popular tourist attractions, in between the spectacular palaces, temples, and tombs that appear on the covers of guidebooks, an entire category of Indian architecture has faded into obscurity and historical obsolescence. Called stepwells, these centuries-old structures consist of deep wells that can be accessed via staircases plunging several stories underground.
