Light Art Created Using Microsoft Kinect

While most people see Microsoft Kinect as a way to get their “dance” on, artist and photographer Audrey Penven saw it as way to create something surreal and otherworldly. After learning that Kinect could project a pattern of infrared dots known as “structured light,” she enlisted the help of some friends. First, her roommate Mike modified his camera with an infrared filter. Then, artist and animator Aaron Muszalski helped Penven with concepts.

Opera House Curtain Illusion (3 pics)

Scanning images of crumpled aluminum foil, artist Pae White made this mind-bending main stage curtain for the Oslo Opera House. The digitized image was fed into a computer driven loom to weave the curtain, creating the illusion of a 3D surface. Called “Metafoil,” it's a modern take on the centuries-old tradition of weaving, but with a digital twist.

Seattle-based Japanese artist Yumiko Kayukawa is currently showing new works at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. By mixing pop culture references with more traditional Japanese imagery, the artist takes us on a strange and mysterious journey. Watch as her brave heroine becomes surrounded by an entourage of wild animals including bears, wolves, bunnies and deer.

Fine Art of an Icelandic Volcano Eruption (10 photos)

In 2010, Iceland experienced an epic volcanic eruption that captured the attention of people worldwide. Eyjafjallajkull spewed ash into the air as experts warned that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud was sufficient to jam aircraft engines. European air traffic was at a standstill for weeks. While most saw the natural disaster as a huge inconvenience, Swedish landscape and aerial photographer Hans Strand saw it as an opportunity.
