16-Year-Old’s Amazingly Hyperrealistic Graphite Portrait Wins Top Prize

16-year-old Shania McDonagh recently took home the top prize of the 60th Texaco Children's Art Competition, an art competition for young people held in Ireland every year. Known for her incredibly detailed and hyperrealistic portraits, the young artist has won first place in her age category four years in a row (check out those works below), but this year marks the first time she's also received the overall top prize.

Stunning Swimming Sculpture is Carved From a Single Piece of Wood

It may be hard to believe, but this stunning sculpture was carved from a single piece of wood. Artist Stefanie Rocknak, who you may remember as the creator of that ghostly Edgar Allan Poe sculpture, is behind this fascinating figurative work. Slightly larger than life-size, the sculpture, called The Swimmer, was part of a three piece commission under the project The Triathlete. The other two pieces are called The Biker and The Runner.

Gorgeous Open-Impressionism Paintings of Colorful Landscapes by Erin Hanson

Artist Erin Hanson has always had an affinity for painting, but she didn't pursue her full time artistic career until she was living in Las Vegas and rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon. The breathtaking scenes throughout the land prompted Hanson to develop a goal of producing one painting per week. For the past eight years, she has stuck to that goal and continues to create stunning oil landscapes filled with a sense of wonder.

Hundreds of Paper Birds Roost in an Origami Chimney

Inspired by the Vaux's swift, a species of birds that flock together in groups of 30 or more, and that build their nests in dark cavities, paper artist Bijian Fan has created this mesmerizing installation called Roosting . This particular work was inspired by the swifts in downtown Los Angeles.
