The spine is critical to human mobility. The spinal cord connects the brain to the branches of the nervous system throughout the body. To move the legs, for example, a signal is sent by the brain's motor cortex through the spinal cord to the muscles of the legs. When the spine is severed, this communication becomes impossible, resulting in paralysis.

NASA Satellite Captures Epic GIF of Moon Transiting the Earth

Though it may look like a CGI animation, this gif of the Moon transiting Earth is very real. And what's even more incredible is the side of the Moon that's visible in the imagery. Taken in 2015 by a camera aboard NASA's Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite, it shows the elusive “dark side” of the Moon.

Scientists Made an “Everlasting Bubble” That Lasted 465 Days Without Popping

Bubbles are more scientifically complex than one might think. The popular children's activity of blowing bubbles can teach researchers about evaporation. A new study published in Physical Review Fluids marks an exciting milestone in bubble technology. A team from the University of Lille in France created a bubble from a composite liquid film which lasted a whopping 465 days before popping. Typical soap bubbles rarely last longer than a minute in the open air.

Right Now There’s a Jupiter-Size Plasma Tree on the Sun

Thanks to the skills of astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy, we're able to see an incredible “tree” that has been “planted” on the Sun. Clocking in at an impressive 80,000 miles high, this isn't any ordinary tree. It's actually made from plasma that has been pulled away from the Sun by its magnetic field.
