Traveler, surfer and photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh recently captured the rare site of nearly frozen waves breaking on the island of Nantucket. The frigid New England temperatures have turned the sea off the coast of Massachusetts into sheets of water that Nimerfroh likened to “slushies.” The waves appear dense and move slowly, resembling folded pastries as they peak. The surface of the waves gleams with rippling patterns made up of millions of ice crystals. The day clocked in at 19F, or -7.2C.
“The harbor to the main land is frozen solid. No boats running,” the photographer says of the day the waves froze. “The day after I took these, it actually froze up the shoreline for 200 yards out.”
