Photographer Emma Phillips saw artistic beauty in an ordinary salt refinery in Australia, and she preserved the view in a surreal photo series showcasing the otherworldly landscape. The Melbourne native was road-tripping across her home country when she stumbled upon the mine, located in the region responsible for producing most of the nation's salt supply. She easily walked through the gate to the small facility and spent about an hour capturing images of the luminous mountains of white crystals.
The photos are purposely drained of color, left with only weak hints of blue sky and yellow machinery. The photographer, who turned the series into a self-published book, says she was captivated by the sense of being on a remote planet surrounded by foreign terrain. “The place looked like some kind of abstract expressionist art,” she says.
