Astronomers Make a Discovery That Challenges Our Notions of the Universe

It's common knowledge that our planet is part of the Milky Way, and that our galaxy is just a small part of the universe. But an international team of researchers guided by astronomers from the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy is making us rethink just how large that universe may be. After studying the movements of 56,000 galaxies, they've determined that our neighborhood is much larger than we originally thought.

Detailed Milky Way Map Shows Hidden Parts of Our Galaxy

Astronomers have published the most detailed infrared map of the Milky Way. With over 200,000 images taken by ESO‘s VISTA telescope, this map is a breakthrough that gives astronomers new insight into our galaxy. The telescope, located in Chile, is used to map large portions of the sky. Thanks to its infrared camera, VIRCAM, which can see through the Milky Way's dust and gas, astronomers can see into hidden areas.

Watch Two SpaceX Polaris Dawn Astronauts Take the First Ever Private Spacewalk

The future of commercial space travel seems to be here. The first-ever private spacewalk took place early morning on Thursday, September 12. Two of SpaceX‘s private Polaris Dawn astronauts, American billionaire Jared Isaacman and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis, took turns and spent about 10 minutes standing up out of their Dragon capsule's hatch. The pair have become the first non-professional crew to carry out what is considered one of the riskiest maneuvers in space.
