Korean artist Young-Deok Seo first mesmerized us nearly a year ago with his incredible bicycle chain sculptures. In that time, Seo has added two new pieces to his collection called Meditation V and Anguish IV. Each figurative sculpture depicts man as a cold, hard, and broken creature, stricken with emotions. The sculptor's works reflect his recurring theme of man being consumed by the industrial materials in our world.
In Meditation V, we're presented with a head in deep contemplation extending face-first from a flat plane. There's a stillness in the figure's face, despite the busy pattern of the countless bicycle chain links that compose the structure. It is an apparent response to the crowded and often hectic modern lifestyle that is overrun with technology and man-made mechanics. Anguish IV is yet another response using a different set of chains in which the figure takes an alternative approach by cupping his ears. In this one we get a more than just a head, though the metallic man is cut off just below the waistline.
