The takahē is quite a sight. This flightless bird from New Zealand is known for its spherical body and blue-green plumage, which makes it look a bit like a bird-shaped Earth if it weren't for its bright red beak and legs. These fascinating birds were long thought to be extinct, but now, thanks to a concerted conservation effort, they are once again thriving in New Zealand’s South Island.

Laika Dog Befriends a Brown Bear Family and Their Bond Is Captured by Endearing Drone Footage

We've seen a fair share of unusual animal friendships over the years. Some are very cute, while some are simply head-scratching. Amazingly, a gang of furry pals caught on camera seems to fit both. What started as a coincidence while traveling has now transformed into visits to 20 countries, over 50 cities, images of 60 beloved dog breeds, and, now, a book.

Incredible Acorn Woodpeckers Build Storage Trees That Can Hold 50,000 Acorns

Many woodland creatures love munching on acorns, but nothing is quite like the acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus). This medium-sized woodpecker is found across Central America and the western United States. They use their impressive pecking ability to create an incredible storage system for their precious acorns. Acorn woodpeckers create “granaries” or “storage trees” out of dead branches, trees, houses, or even utility poles.
