4000 Ceramic Birds Snatched From a Museum

How much fun would it be to see thousands of birds scattered around one of your favorite museums? If you were at Victoria and Albert Museum for one particular day back in 2006, you could have experienced this yourself. Trophy was a temporary installation by artist Clare Twomey which was comprised of 4,000 blue clay birds.

Urs Fischer’s Dramatically Melting Sculptures

At last year's Venice Art Biennale, one of the standout installations involved a full-size wax replica of Giambologna's 16th-century sculpture The Rape of the Sabine Women. Even more intriguing was that an “everyday” man wearing glasses stood facing the sculpture. Like giant candles, both slowly burned to the ground, melting minute by minute. On Fischer's website, you can find photos by Stefan Altenburger that show the amazing progression.

Beautifully Haunting Graffiti at Chernobyl

Photographer Jan Smith reached out to us to tell us about a beautifully haunting photo series he shot at Chernobyl (here's the first). It's been exactly 26 years since the catastrophic nuclear accident occurred in the Ukrainian city. In 1986, the city was evacuated and today it is mostly uninhabited, save for a small number of people.

Massive Mushroom Cloud Made of Kitchen Utensils

New Delhi-based Indian artist Subodh Gupta's sculptural installation titled Line of Control mimics the dismaying mushroom cloud that forms from the deployment of nuclear warfare, most historically recognized from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The piece features 26 tons worth of stainless steel utensils, including spoons, cans, pots, and pans.
