Mesmerizing GIFs of a Mechanical Model of the Solar System

Designer Ken Condal built a mesmerizing orrery (mechanical model of the solar system) with multiple handcrafted gears, wooden and acrylic spheres, and the mechanical engineering help of David Clark. Like a tiny kinetic sculpture, the structure takes motion through a carefully constructed system of gears, which are activated through a winding lever at the bottom.

Sculptural Chandeliers Accented With Real Dandelion Seeds

Entitled Fragile Future III, these highly sculptural light fixtures are made of bronze, LED's and real dandelion seeds that were meticulously picked by hand and then connected one by one to the lights. The Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of Studio Drift strive to promote critical engagement through their conceptual work and the use of this labor-intensive process is a clear statement against mass production and throwaway culture.

Modern Tree Snake Houses Stand on Stilts in Portugal

Architects Lus Rebelo de Andrade and Tiago Rebelo de Andrade have recently designed and built two new additions, known as Tree Snake Houses, to the Pedras Salgadas Eco Resort in Portugal. These single-room cabins, prefabricated and assembled on site in order to minimize the impact on the nature park, are situated on stilts high in the tree tops.

Innovative Disappearing Bed Design Expands Living Space

For anyone looking to maximize on a small amount of living space, this innovative bed design is the perfect solution! Architects Julie Nabucet and Marc Baillargeon teamed up to convert a tiny 130-square-foot space into a functional apartment for a student living in Paris. They used every bit of space in the room–formerly a master bathroom of a larger apartment–to maximize on both efficiency as well as modern style.
