Photographers Gain Entry into Traditional African Village Where Every House Is a Work of Art

Nestled at the base of a hill, overlooking the Savannah, lies Tiébélé—an African village in Burkina Faso. First settled in the 15th Century, the 1.2-hectare commune is home to the Kassena people, their chief, and royal court—together making up one of oldest ethnic groups in Burkina Faso. In 2009, photographer Rita Willaert and travel blogger Olga Stavrakis were lucky enough to be some of the few people ever allowed to visit the isolated site.

Using a Canon macro lens and her own pet cats (Zelda, Zonic, and Zorro) as models, the resulting close-ups offer an uncommon view of our feline friends. In some instances, it feels like you’re looking at a portal to a different dimension. In others, there’s an alien allure to the eyes.

Modern Paris Seen Through Retro Porthole Windows of ‘Tours Aillaud’ High-Rises

Parisian photographer Laurent Kronental’s latest photo series, Les Yeux des Tours, captures life through the porthole windows of the Tours Aillaud—a social housing estate in the Pablo Picasso district of Nanterre. With 18 towers ranging from 7 to 38 stories high, the housing project accounts for a total of 1,600 apartments. It was designed by Emile Aillaud between 1973 and 1981 as a response to the post-war housing shortage.
