U-2 Spy Plane Pilot Captures Stunning Up-Close Photos of Northern Lights

Many photographers are enchanted by the colorful glow of the Northern Lights, but no one has ever photographed them quite like Ross Franquemont. Based out of the Beale Air Force Base in California, Franquemont is a U-2 pilot and instructor with a passion for photography. On a recent overseas mission from the UK, a run through the Northern Lights at 70,000 feet provided him with an incredible setting for some one-of-a-kind photographs.

Long Exposure Photos Capture Drones “Painting” Light Halos Over Mountains

Chicago-based photographer Reuben Wu has been wowing us for years with his innovative landscape photography. By attaching LED lights to a drone, he's able to capture incredible images of the natural world from above. With the lights casting a haunting glow across rock formations, his Lux Noctis series has been incredibly well received. And now, he's taking things up a level by using long exposures to “paint” halos over rock pinnacles.

Photographer Matěj Kříž explores the depths of the great unknown with his camera. Using a combination of on-the-ground and aerial photography, he has captured the mystifying ice caves of Iceland. The breathtaking locale looks like it’s encased in glass and from certain vantage points doesn’t look like a landscape at all.
