The gritty world Greek artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis creates is full of ironic-metaphoric language. In particular, it's about beauty and darkness and how juxtaposing the grittiness of the street with an aesthetically pleasing graphic design gives the viewer an unforgettable street art experience. “I cannot really relate to the common sense of ugliness;” continues Vasmoulakis, “in Berlin sidewalks are well arranged, straight and wide with beautiful – artistic decoration, street lamps, railing etc, whereas in Athens sidewalks are like the rough seal all cracked, dirty and narrow, with those awful manholes that make terrible noise when you step on them. The actual hell of pedestrians! I really find this ugliness beautiful.” Using the blank space as a way to open up the painting, he envelopes our view, causing us to forget for a moment where we are. Whether we're looking up at a painting on a building, to the side at a trash bin or inside a phone booth, Alexandros Vasmoulakis' art surprises us and keeps us wanting for more.
