Barcelona-born Jaume Plensa astounds once again with his new figurative installation inhabiting the Galerie Lelong in New York. Entitled Talking Continents, the 19 stainless steel elements are comprised of letters from nine international alphabets.
The collection of effigies stand to represent more than any one individual but rather humanity as a whole. The idea of global unity that has been ever present in Plensa's work is depicted through the figures serenely adrift together but separate. The Spanish sculptor says, “I never stand out for technique, I stand out for ideas. Ideas make a work contemporary, not technique.”
Known most widely for his towering public installations, what can be considered remarkable about this latest creation is the ethereal sense of weightlessness generated by the hanging sculptures. His departure from a rooted, monumental structure allows the sense of tranquility common in his representations of the human form to be significantly amplified and to truly take hold of the viewer.
