The World’s First Floating Apartment Complex

Could this be a solution for sustainable living if sea levels rise and the world goes under water due to global warming? Designed by Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio, the Citadel will be the world's first floating apartment complex when completed in the Netherlands.

Built on top of of a floating foundation, the Citadel will house 60 luxury apartments, a car park, and a floating road to access the complex as well as boat docks. Each unit will have its own garden terrace as well as a view of the lake.

The individual apartments are built from prefabricated modules, and in the future, numerous buildings, complexes and residences will float on the water alongside it. As the unit is surrounded by water, and corrosion and maintenance are important issues to consider, aluminum will be used for the building facade, due to its long lifespan and ease of maintenance.
