Botanical is a series of gentle but stunning images that blur the line between photography and painting. Designer and photographer Samuel Zeller presents a modern take on the classical botanical illustrations of the 18th and early 20th century. Zeller combines his design experience with a keen eye for appealing visual aesthetics, capturing glimpses of beauty within the industrial setting of a greenhouse.
Zeller initially studied Graphic Design and Interactive Media Design in Geneva, gaining experience with a variety of agencies, and creating retail spaces and visualizations for international brands, before turning to photography. Botanical explores the rigidly controlled environment of a greenhouse, formed by metal and sheets of glass. The materials in turn create an elegant and refined structure that serves to protect, while at the same time reflecting the beauty and elegance of the exotic plants encased within. His collection turns the man-made structure into a frame for the natural beauty inside. The series serves as a tribute to hand drawn illustrations of the past, opting for a modern digital photography technique to inspire this antique feeling.
Zeller uses photography as a means of expressing emotion, a less constrained language of communication. Botanical pays homage to an architectural period of the past, while celebrating botanical research through a collection of gentle, and beautiful photographs.
