Mark your calenders! Contemporary French artist Shaka will be exhibiting his incredibly arresting paintings for the very first time in North America. Starting October 19 and through November 9, 2012, Shaka will be showing an exciting series of recent works at gallery nine5 in New York.
Update: The Shaka exhibition has been postponed until late November.
In an unmistakable fashion, Shaka's works are a mixture of sculpture and painting where his figures seem to be jumping out of two-dimensional planes. The bodies, in fact, represent the struggle for individuality in social power politics.
As the gallery states, “Besides the large-scale format that is emblematic of his style, his work is known for a pulsating menagerie of polygons, lines, and angles infused with radiating colors. These elements reflect the inner conflicts of each of Shaka's subjects who are searching, presumably like us, for individuality, while simultaneously living within communities organized by social norms.”
Shaka has been practicing his unique method of sculpting right on the canvas since 2007, mixing technical elements and classical influences with new-age styles like tattoo design and graffiti culture.
