Henry McCausland is both an illustrator and an animator whose style consists of wild brush strokes with hints of small line details. The color palette that he uses are out of the ordinary which causes his work to evoke strong moods of either calmness or energy. When looking at his pieces, it's hard not to be reminded of fauvist art.
Fauvism was a twentieth century movement in modern art. Fauvists were given their nickname by the French word les Fauves meaning “wild beasts” because of their intense colors and wild brush strokes. No doubt, McCausland's work fits this picture, though the thin strokes of detail he adds to his illustrations makes them unique.
Unlike the paint smears, the line details are not wild. Rather, you can tell they were carefully and slowly added in. Many of the details create wonderful patterns, such as the brick patterns on the building, the wood patterns on the fence or even the bark patterns on the tree.
The strokes of detail, that almost seem to control the wild smears of paint, add a whole new level of beauty.
