New Winter Olympics 2014 Pictograms Revealed

New pictograms have been revealed for the 2014 Winter Olympic games set to take place in Sochi, Russia. Each of the twenty-two icons displays a figurative representation of the winter competitions, from skiing and snowboarding to bobsledding and curling. The symbolic images are to appear at the games themselves, guiding visitors to their designated events, as well as on tickets, event schedules, and licensed merchandise.

Inspired by the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, the graphic designs echo the style of the vintage Summer game icons without fully copying it. This new set incorporates the minimalist stickman figures whose smooth and curved bodies lack sharp edges though they expand beyond the monochromatic color scheme as they explode in blues, reds, greens, and purples. Additionally, they comes in two forms–one is a solid color version and the other a patchwork silhouette. The quilted design pattern is “the combination of 16 ornaments of the most famous national crafts in Russia, from Gzhel to Khokhloma.”

Be sure to check out all of the pictograms in this Flickr set.
