Massachusetts-based artist Rachael Cassiani creates abstract landscape paintings inspired by the sandy cliffs, shorelines, and blue skies of her local beaches. Each bold oil painting manages to capture the essential elements of the tranquil scenes with simplified shapes and vivid color.
“I have always used art as a form of therapy,” admits Cassiani. “My process on each painting starts with a photo that I take while outside on trails, beaches, fields, etc. Shortly after I gather my inspiration, I sketch my idea onto a blank canvas, followed by picking a color scheme that is usually quite vibrant.”
Rendered on a variety of geometrically-shaped canvases, Cassiani decides on the color and composition by picking out the most dominant hues and shapes of the real landscape. Her abstract renditions exaggerate the rocky formations, rolling hills, and the clouds in the sky with clean shapes filled with single, vibrant pigments. Cassiani says, “To me the colors bring joy and a sense of calm. My main hope is to create a piece that gives its viewers a happy energy.”
