Controversial Modern Art – Device to Root Out Evil

No, this picture isn't upside down. “Device to Root Out Evil” was designed by American artist Dennis Oppenheim, and is a sculpture of what looks to be an upside-down church. The steeple, usually piercing the sky in its lunge toward heaven, is now at ground level, pursuing with vigor, the demons of the deep.

Modern Architecture – Blossoming Dubai (5 pics)

Designed to resemble a blossoming flower, Greek architecture firm Petra Architects recently submitted “Blossoming Dubai” to the Zaabeel Park Tall Emblem Structure Competition. The tower is equipped with two elevators that run on spiral rails which turn 135 degrees and ascend 450 feet (138 meters). The lifts ascend from the lower ground floor (where the visitors enter) to the cafeteria level and the viewing platform above.

Caught in the Act – Zhang Haiying (10 paintings)

Chinese-born Zhang Haiying paintings are based on photographs that he found on Anti-Vice Campaign websites aimed at cracking down on prostitution and pornography in China. Zhang's paintings neither advocate nor criticize illicit activity, but evoke emotion from the associated abuse of power, desperation, exclusion, and vulnerability. Using dramatic tones, he puts the spotlight on authoritative figures and strip club sleaze.
