Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Pond Surface Beautifully Frozen to Resemble a Japanese Rock Garden

Winter temperatures can cause ice to do some unexpected things, and Reddit user odstane can definitely attest to this. He recently shared a series of photos from his frozen backyard pond, and the now-block of ice created some unusually beautiful effects. Concentric circle patterns cover the surface, and they resemble the lines you'd see on a topographic (elevation) map or even in a Japanese rock garden.

Gorgeous Drawings Combine the Human Body with Nature

Nunzio Paci is an artist based in Bologna, Italy. His gorgeous, multifaceted drawings depict the human body combined with nature and animals. Pen, pencil, and a little bit of color are used to craft these intricate images that mix ink drips with fine, precise renderings. These pieces could be part of a sketchbook because they include small, written notations next to the drawings – as if Paci will refer to them later.

Tiny Shih-Tzu Disguised as an Adorable Teddy Bear

Halloween might be over, but that doesn’t mean that your lovable pooch can’t wear a costume every once in a while. A little Shih-Tzu named Munchkin dressed up as a walking teddy bear that was crafted by her owner, Cindy Roth. The adorable canine perfectly fits the stuffed animal’s frame, and from certain angles it looks like a fuzzy brown bear is waddling towards you.

Mysterious Photos of Fluffy Clouds Encased in Glass by Raffaello De Vito

Italian photographer Raffaello De Vito recently unveiled an intriguing series that he calls Atmosphere-Clouds. The primarily monochromatic images feature six cloud structures that are encased in glass and seemingly floating in midair. They resemble the picturesque, fluffy white vapors that we see in the sky on a nice day, and it almost looks as though they were contained in these boxes for safekeeping. We can't help but wonder how the photographer constructed these fascinating illusions.
