Intricate Portraits Painted on Persian Rugs Link the Past to the Present

Carpets are, in and of themselves, already an intricate art form, but Mateo Humano takes the practice a step further. For years, the French artist has reimagined the relationship between modern, ornamental, and traditional craft, painting highly contemporary portraits of women upon Persian rugs. The result, as Humano himself writes, is a striking mix of “urban art and the heritage of ancient cultures,” establishing a clear lineage between the past and the present.

‘Measuring the Universe’ Installation Invited Visitors to Record Their Names and Height

Remember marking your height on a wall with a pencil when you were a kid? The nostalgic tradition of tracking growth inspired Roman Ondák’s 2007 installation Measuring the Universe. But instead of measuring only his own family, Ondák invited every visitor at MoMA in New York to participate. Each person stood against the wall, where someone would mark their height and label it with their first name and the date of their visit.

Artist Meditates Upon Postcolonial Identity With Hybrid Paintings [Interview]

Throughout the three years that he attended art school, Sid Pattni never learned how to paint his own skin tone. Representing white skin came more naturally to him than brown skin, and it was only after his program that he began questioning why. It was at this point that the Australian artist laid the foundations for his creative practice, veering toward post-colonial frameworks that could more adequately address his concerns with diaspora and displacement.

Thousands of Tiny Vases Come Together To Form Monumental Sculptures

It’s hard to ignore the level of texture in Grégoire Scalabre’s sculptures. Even from afar, his voluminous and otherworldly pieces shoot out toward us, their soft spikes, valleys, and curves as captivating as mountain ranges. Look closer, and these forms begin to resemble impossibly tiny vases, wrapped so meticulously around the artwork’s surface that they almost seem to be vibrating.
