New Evocative Portraits Harmoniously Blend with Paper Maps

Paper maps aren't as common as they used to be, since the advent of various apps and GPS systems we find ourselves relying on more and more during our travels. While this may be the case, artist Ed Fairburn appreciates the craft of cartography and is working to repurpose physical maps as he expands his portfolio. Fairburn combines landscapes with the human figure by expressively exercising his eye for detail and appreciation for natural beauty.

Artist Builds Articulating Pneumatic Wings Fit for a Human

Artist Alexis Noriega of The Crooked Feather has designed a handmade pair of bird wings fit for an actual human. As a matter of fact, the artist's creation is equipped with pneumatic automation, which means that the wings can extend and retract through a sophisticated air pressure system, operated at the flick of a switch. To create the base of this impressive construction, Noriega used fabric, glue, and wire.

Giant Urban Flowers Bloom When Pedestrians Pass By Under Them

Architecture firm HQ Architects developed a public installation that offers an artistic aesthetic to the environment through playfully responsive design. The Warde project, located in Jerusalem's Vallero Square–an urban area that's in poor condition–is being given a set of towering flower sculptures, big enough to draw the gaze of the entire plaza. Rather than fighting against the marketplace's metropolitan nature, designers wanted to work in harmony with the municipality.

Artist Transforms Driftwood into Stunning Sculptures of Animals in Motion

Sculptor James Doran-Webb uses pieces of driftwood to form stunning creatures that look as though they're in motion. In a scale that's larger than life, rabbits, horses, and birds appear to be in mid hop, gallop, and flap. Webb's work with the highly-textured wood is methodical, and he fuses many small pieces to mimic large swaths of hair or fur.
