Riveting Trash-Based Sculptures Mirror Significant Environmental Issues

Alejandro Durn's Washed Up was recently honored with the 2015 Project Launch Juror's Award, which recognizes an outstanding photographer working with fine art or a documentary. For his project, Durn chose to take on the noticeable environmental issues that are currently affecting Sian Ka'an, Mexico's largest federally-protected reserve.  The insightful artist started out by identifying waste from fifty nations on six continents, which washed ashore on Sian Ka'an.

Vintage Photos Fuse to Create Fantastically Surreal Landscape Collages

California-based collage artist Eugenia Loli fuses vintage photographs to create fantastically surreal compositions. Her colorful scenes often depict people in strange lands that conjure vivid dreams, where outer space is just outside our window and entire cityscapes are at the bottom of a cave. In essence, they seem to communicate a feeling of wanderlust as subjects experience new places. Loli wasn't always an artist.

Ocean-Inspired Glass Vases and Sculptures Capture the Beauty of Cascading Waves

Santa Cruz, California-based husband and wife Paul DeSomma and Marsha Blaker are impressive glass artists individually, but the stunning pieces they produce as a duo blow us away with the breathtaking force of a tidal wave. Working mainly with hot glass, the pair create gorgeous, ocean-inspired glass sculptures that mimic the grace and motion of cascading waves.

Amazingly Intricate Laser-Cut Wood Relief Sculptures by Gabriel Schama

Oakland-based artist Gabriel Schama creates incredibly intricate, densely layered wood relief sculptures using thin, laser-cut pieces of mahogany plywood. He starts with a vector illustration that is sent to a laser cutter. Lasers carve designs into 1/8-inch sheets of plywood, which are then glued together and varnished. The result is a magnificently textured, mandala-like work of art comprised of ornate layers that twist, overlap, and intersect spectacularly.
