Beautiful African Beach Calligraphy by Andrew van der Merwe

While we've seen incredible sand drawings before, like those by England-based artist Tony Plant, and while we'll always be a fan of calligraphy, especially when it's mixed with graffiti, we've never thought of putting the two art forms together…until now. Today, we stumbled upon the work of Andrew van der Merwe, a professional calligrapher, based in Cape Town, South Africa, who also goes by the title, “world's first beach calligrapher.

Miniature People Living in an Unusually Whimsical World

He blends toy figures with a variety of regular sized props to create the illusion of great proportions within a very small space. The Savannah, Georgia-based artist's collection explores “the transcendence of memory through time in relation to space.” Like a scene from one's own memory, each frame presents a dim, translucent snapshot of these people yearning to recall their time in a specific location.
