Beautifully Radiant Circle of Life

Time and time again, nature astounds us with its beauty. Artist Kathy Klein draws inspiration from its magnificence to create these beautifully radiant mandalas which she refers to as danmalas. Danmala is a portmanteau of two words in Sanskrit: dan (the giver) and mala (garland of flowers). Klein uses a variety of materials including flower petals, pine cones, seeds, vegetables, rocks, leaves and other plant life-like cacti to form her symmetrical paradise pieces.

Beautiful Landscapes Are Not What They Seem

Everyday, I learn a new way that the human eye can be deceived. Tom Deininger is an artist based in Rhode Island who constructs these beautiful landscape sculptures that are more than meets the eye. What appears to be a series of barren birch trees is actually an amalgam of wires, cables, and other alternative materials. Despite their grandeur size, these installations can fool even the most discerning eye.

Sculpture Breaks Free

Not since Paige Bradley' Expansion have I been this intrigued with a sculpture. A 20 feet long, 8 feet high sculpture called Freedom, is currently located in front of the GSK World Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA. In 2000, sculptor Zenos Frudakis created it around our universal need to break free from a situation, be it an internal struggle or an adversarial circumstance.

Creeptastic X-Ray Embroidery

Philadelphia-based artist Matthew Cox layers embroidery on top of medical x-rays to create these wonderfully weird pieces. The clash of two such divergent materials, cloth and plastic, already seems strange enough but add in the fact that one is quick and technical while the other is labor intensive and you have something that's quite thought-provoking.
