Glass Sculptures of Hands Knitting Themselves Celebrate the Act of Making

Glass art is an age-old creative form. While we are accustomed to seeing it take the shape of elegant vases and chandeliers, it is rarely used to convey movement. The art of Carol Milne, however, is an exception. Based in Seattle, she works on a series of glass sculptures that depict hands knitting themselves in a celebration of nurturing oneself and the act of creating.

Artist Uses His Own Blood to Create Frozen Self Portrait Sculptures of His Head

Like many artists, Marc Quinn explores the notion of self through portraiture. But his self-portraiture offers an unexpected—and squeamish—twist to the genre. In his 1991 sculpture titled Self, he began to use his body as raw material for the piece. He made a cast of his own head and filled it with 10 pints of his blood immersed in frozen silicone. To keep the piece in a solid state, its temperature is maintained at -0.
