Stunningly Life-Like Figures Hand Carved from Wood by Peter Demetz

Italian artist Peter Demetz brings ordinary wood to life with his incredible, hand-carved figures. The sculptures, which vary in size from about 20 inches to nearly 50 inches tall, feature men, women, and children standing still against a plain, sometimes-colored background. Demetz's attention to detail is awe-inspiring. He's able to shape tiny folds in clothing, reproduce loose strands of hair, and define the human anatomy so well that you'd think these figures really exist.

Artist Spent a Year in the Woods Creating Mysterious Sculptures

Deep in the woods of southern France, artist Spencer Byles transformed the forest into a mysterious wonderland through a series of spectacular, organic sculptures. Byles spent a year immersed in the woodlands of La Colle sur Loup, Villeneuve-Loubet, and Mougins for this ambitious project. Surrounded by flora and fauna, the sculptor used only cables and natural, found materials to create his stunning, large-scale works of art.

Glass Portraits Are Sliced Incredibly Like a Loaf of Bread

Self-taught, California-based artist Loren Stump makes a variety of beautiful glass works, but he is best known for his incredible skill at murrine (also known as murrina or murrini), a 4,000-year-old Mideast technique where colored patterns or images made in a glass cane are revealed when cut in cross-sections. Murrine are designed by layering different colors of molten glass around a core, then heating and stretching it into a rod.

MMM Exclusive: Experiencing Jaume Plensa’s "Wonderland"

When I visited Calgary earlier this year to cover Beakerhead, I had the pleasure of walking around the city with an extremely talented photographer, Neil Zeller. When we approached Calgary's tallest tower, The Bow, this amazing sculpture by Jaume Plensa named Wonderland immediately caught my attention. What stood out most was how remarkable it looked from several distinct angles. The wire mesh piece stands 39-feet-high and resembles a young girl's head.
