IKEA Releases DIY Instructions to Create Your Own Globe-Shaped Greenhouse

Last year, we shared our excitement over the Growroom, a spherical and sustainable solution to urban farming designed by Space10 (a “future-living lab” launched by IKEA in 2015). It was merely a highly anticipated prototype at the time; however, IKEA has made it a reality. The innovative furniture retailer recently released instructions allowing anyone to build their own DIY greenhouse.

Designer Grows Trees as Artistic Furniture Straight From the Ground

Using what he calls “Zen 3D printing,” designer Gavin Munro is challenging notions of traditional furniture design. Instead of chopping down mature trees to saw and nail into chairs and tables, his company Full Grown actually grows furniture from the ground up. Trees are strategically planted, grafted, and shaped into specific structures. When harvested, they're already elegant furniture pieces.

Artist “Fixes” Broken Wooden Furniture With Modern Translucent Materials

Brazilian artist Tatiane Freitas blends classic and contemporary design for her My New Old Chair series. In a twist on kintsugi—a Japanese tradition where fractured pottery is repaired with gold—broken furniture is revitalized through the addition of acrylic resin. The resulting contemporary, yet vintage, pieces demonstrate a harmony of opposing forces. In fact, it's this push and pull that interests the artist.
