18 Otherworldly Finalists From the 2022 Astronomy Photographer of the Year Contest

Now in its 14th year, the Royal Observatory Greenwich's Astronomy Photographer of the Year is an event that any lover of the stars looks forward to. While the winners of the 2022 contest won't be announced until September, the competition is whetting our appetite by releasing this year's shortlist. From the over 3,000 images that were entered by amateur and professional astrophotographers around the world, the field was narrowed to these 36 finalists.

Winners of the 2022 Audubon Photography Awards Celebrate the Beauty of Our Feathered Friends

Now in its 13th year, the Audubon Photography Awards are a celebration of bird photography. Arranged by the National Audubon Society, an organization whose mission is to protect birds and their environment, the contest had 2,500 entries from across the United States and Canada. This year's grand prize went to Jack Zhi for his image of two raptors in flight. The photo, taken in California, shows a white-tailed kite hovering in mid-air.

Striking Portraits Showcase the Wild Beauty of Camargue Horses in Southern France

Photographer Albert Dros captures the majestic beauty of wild white horses in his series titled The White Angels of Camargue. The name refers to the breed of horse, the Camargue, which has an ancient history and is indigenous to its particular region of southern France. They are considered to be one of the oldest breeds in the world, and today they are semi-feral living in the area’s marsh.

Striking Portraits Shed Light on American Gun Culture

In 2018, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti was on assignment with National Geographic in Kansas. He had a few free days; and, curious about the numerous gun shops he had seen, he decided to go inside and see who was shopping there. The discussion he had  with a customer, which led to a spontaneous photo shoot, led him down a path to create his award-winning series Ameriguns.
