Powerful Ad Featuring Shepard Fairey Illustration Asks Us All To Fight for AAPI Visibility

In the United States, there has been a staggering increase in violence against the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. The first quarter of 2021 saw a more than 164% uptick in anti-Asian hate crime reports in 16 major U.S. cities, when compared to the same time in 2020. The violence that the community has experienced is not new, but many are calling for all people to recognize the plight of the AAPI community.

Anonymous Artist Installs Bust of Enslaved Explorer Who Accompanied Lewis and Clark

We've seen sculptures spring up unexpectedly in random locations recently—including the mysterious monolith—but there was a particularly poignant pop-up over the past weekend. An anonymous guerrilla artist organized a clandestine installation of a new monument at Mount Tabor Park in Portland, Oregon. The heroic bust depicts York, an enslaved Black man who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their famed westward expedition. Below it is an inscription detailing the known aspects of the man’s life.
