Dheera Venkatraman‘s black and white photography series, titled Time Traveling in China, almost appears to be one amazing, real-life “spot the difference” game. Scrolling through his stunning picture pairs emphasizes the massive steps that China, and the world, has taken over the past century. By comparing the time-separated images, he is able to showcase the amazing transformation of China's ever-changing landscape. His project brilliantly captures the historical evolution of a country over 100 eventful years.
Venkatraman's work highlights the changes in both the focus and values of our civilization over time. He first began the extensive project by gathering visually interesting pictures from a variety of books and websites. He then recreated each image, matching angles and focal lengths as closely as possible to the originals. The modern day shots showcase the ability of the country to erect sweeping skyscrapers and landmarks that radically transform the photographed scenes, catering to the needs of an expanding population. Although Venkatramam's task wasn't always easy–in some locations the vantage point was on private property or completely obstructed– he was still able to collect a stunning series of images that probe into a century of radical transformation, development and growth.
