Soothing Minimalist Black and White Photos

If you are in need of a calm moment during your busy day, we highly recommend taking a look at these soothing black and white photographs by Gavin Dunbar. The Edinburgh-based photographer focuses mainly on seascapes and minimalist subjects in these long-exposure images. He finds everyday objects, like a rock or a wooden post, and turns them into geometric, high-contrast patterns against soft, blended and blurry backgrounds.

Each image captures the mysterious beauty of nature while also creating a sense of wonder and exploration for his viewers. It often seems that we are looking at items floating on puffs of clouds or pathways that have no tangible beginning or end. By shooting in black and white, isolating objects within the frame, and cropping in a square format, Dunbar is able to consistently convey this sense of curiosity along with a peaceful sense of solitude in each photograph. The everyday objects are abstracted but yet somehow still feel familiar, and he reminds us to always look with fresh eyes and to see our surroundings in new and unexpected ways.
