While some artists are attracted to the organic forms found in nature, others gravitate towards the clean lines of cityscapes. However, if you're not used to drawing architecture, it can seem like an intimidating subject. Fortunately, by breaking structures down into geometric shapes, you'll find that it is not as difficult as you think.
In this tutorial, we will learn how to draw a simple house by breaking down the process into nine easy-to-follow steps with illustrations. All you'll need to follow along is a pencil, eraser, pen, some paper, and reference photos (if you want to add your own creative touch to the abode). Ready to get started? Then let's draw a house!
Learn How to Draw a Simple House Step by Step
Step 1: Draw a triangle
First, we're going to construct the roof of the house. So, draw a triangle.
Step 2: Add a rectangle
Next, add a rectangle to the base of the triangle.
Step 3: Draw another rectangle
Add another rectangle of somewhat equal size right next to the first rectangle.
Step 4: Sketch a trapezoid
Afterward, sketch a trapezoidal shape above the second rectangle, creating the rest of the roof.
Step 5: Add features to the roof
Begin adding features to the roof of the house, such as a rectangular chimney and a triangular Dormer window.
Step 6: Draw the doors and windows
Next, add windows and doors to the body of the house using various rectangular shapes.
Step 7: Add detail to the doors and windows
Fill in the windows and doors with details of the molding and window panes.
Step 8: Add detail to the roof
After, you can add texture to the roof by drawing a series of straight, parallel lines.
Step 9: Go over the drawing in ink
Lastly, it is time to finish the drawing by going over it in ink. So, using your pen of choice, carefully trace over all of the pencil lines. Afterward, you can choose to add more texture to the house and/or fill it in with color.
All done!
