Artist Jim Musil uses his brush to capture the mutable patterns of the sky in striking Impressionist-style landscape paintings. Each one of his acrylic panels features a wide variety of textures, including watercolor-like washes, dry brushing, and geometric blocks of color. In doing so, the artist's immersive expressionist skies convey a strong sense of emotion which affects the landscapes depicted below them.
Although Musil studied painting in college, he did not pursue art until many years later. “During art school, I never had a lot of patience for painting. I found it too fussy and unforgiving,” the artist explained on his website. It wasn't until 2016 that Musil picked up his paintbrush again, sparking a rush of inspired, creative work. Since then, the artist has favored depictions of nature over urban life with scenes ranging from meadows, deserts, seascapes, and forested lakes.
“To me, painting is like a puzzle—you have to scrutinize every element and place them in the correct relation to each other,” Musil said. The majority of his square hardboard panels feature a large and dominant sky which is anchored by a bucolic ground. While the artist's specialty is sweeping environments, he often includes a more detailed subject for the viewer to focus on, such as flowers, trees, boats, and occasionally, a human figure.
