People Travel to This Idyllic Cat Sanctuary in Hawaii to Play with 500 Freely Roaming Felines

Nestled on the small Hawaiian island of Lanai is a feline oasis that’s home to nearly 500 cats. Known as the Lanai Cat Sanctuary, it provides food, shelter, adoption, healthcare, and spay/neuter services for the cats that roam the land. The spacious, 25,000 square-foot-enclosure features things that felines love—there are cubicles for sleeping, “pallet palaces” for hiding, large irrigation pipes for playing, as well as kitty-climbing jungle gyms. Accompanying the man-made additions are bushes, long grasses, and plenty of trees for the cats to exercise their basic instincts.

This feline paradise—which has appropriately earned the nickname the “Furr Seasons”—is open to the public daily and welcomes visitors from around the world. You can feed, cuddle, and brush the cats, although that could prove hard—so many of them want your attention! The adorable four-legged residents are available for either foster or adoption, but if that doesn’t occur, they’re free to spend the rest of their lives at the sanctuary.
