Finnish photographer Mikko Lagerstedt captures breathtakingly beautiful photos of the night sky shining over magnificent landscapes. Dazzling stars, glimpses of the Milky Way, and otherworldly auroras can be seen with startling clarity in his gorgeous images. Each shot is an extraordinary reflection of the universe's splendor unveiled for those who seek adventure when darkness falls.
“The weather, timing and lunar phases make it difficult to predict a good astrophotography day–that gives it a challenging twist,” Lagerstedt told Instagram Blog. “There is a sense of mystery every time I take a long-exposure, and you can't know how the picture will turn out. It is one of the key things that inspires me to capture night photographs.”
Amazingly, Lagerstedt is completely self-taught. He's only been photographing since 2008, when he was struck by a moment of inspiration while driving to a relative's cabin one summer day. According to him, “After a rainy day, the sun started shining, and the fog was rising in the fields. I just had to stop and watch this beautiful moment, and then I realized that I wanted to start capturing these kinds of moments.”
Since then, Lagerstedt has been incredibly open about sharing his editing process and secrets of the trade with other budding photographers. For more info on what goes in to creating each image, check out his website, where he frequently posts helpful tutorials and tips.
