Classic Books in Modern Covers (13 favorites)

While I first learned about Coralie Bickford-Smith's penguin cloth-bound classic series through Design*Sponge in October of 2009, I didn't feel compelled to write about it till I saw it pop up again on Very Short List this morning. As they're now selling these beautifully bound books at Anthropologie, I had a chance to really take a look at them and appreciate the careful design approach behind each.

In Search of Missing Pieces (13 sculptures)

At first glance, Bruno Catalano's sculptures look incomplete. Look again and you'll notice that Catalano created these disappearing travelers with missing midsections on purpose. Awaiting an unknown destination, these travelers, with their determined lack of volume, invite the viewer to mentally fill in what's missing. Where are these people traveling to? What are they searching for?

sPy Opens in Spain! (10 pieces)

One of our favorite urban interventionists, sPy, opened his debut solo show last week in his home country of Spain. In Urbana, sPy features a collection of photographs chronicling his most recent works in New York City and Europe. Instead of using the traditional means and methods of graffiti/street art like stencils, wheatpastes, or aerosol, sPy's work focuses on making playful alterations in the urban landscape.

McDonald’s Adult-Sized Playland (5 pics)

Tell me if I took a little too much Nyquil last night because I feel like I'm hallucinating here. Did McDonalds and their creative agency DDB Sydney really create an adult-sized playland? More than three stories high and taking up the entire forecourt of Customs House at Sydney's Circular Quay, the Playland was constructed by Gregsets, who's worked on incredible set productions for blockbuster movies like Star Wars and Moulin Rouge.
