Sculpture Breaks Free

Not since Paige Bradley' Expansion have I been this intrigued with a sculpture. A 20 feet long, 8 feet high sculpture called Freedom, is currently located in front of the GSK World Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA. In 2000, sculptor Zenos Frudakis created it around our universal need to break free from a situation, be it an internal struggle or an adversarial circumstance.

1500 Scissors Shockingly Suspended from the Ceiling

Imagine walking into a silent room where a woman is mending. Now imagine that she's sitting underneath 1,500 pairs of sharp Chinese scissors that are suspended from the ceiling, precariously pointed downwards. This was the idea behind The Mending Project by Beili Liu. In this ambitious, large-scale installation that was shown this past spring at the Women and Their Work Gallery in Austin Texas, Liu created an atmosphere of beauty and danger.

Intimate Photorealistic Paintings

It has become increasingly difficult to distinguish what medium of art I'm looking at anymore! Marta Penter, a psychologist-turned-painter based in Brazil, is playing mind games with her photorealistic paintings. Her series “Shared Intimacy” features visuals that you'd swear were candid photographs from a personal collection. Penter paints with watercolors and oils on canvas. She focuses on keeping her paintings in black and white with an occasional pop of color.

Capturing the Heart of Sicily

Photographer Michel Perez captures the essence of Sicilian life in the 1960s for Bambi magazine. Perez's photo series, A Sicilian Adventure, features Romanian model Catrinel Menghia in captivating scenes. Browsing through the photos, I feel like I'm looking at stills from a Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren film. The outfits are period-appropriate and Menghia's assets are flaunted in the same fashion as Loren in her most popular Italian cinematic roles.
