The diverse beauty of birds has inspired colorful paintings, incredible paper sculptures, as well as cuddly crochet companions. Artist Rachel Altschuler captures the unique personalities of birds in her series of expressive acrylic paintings. She uses a variety of brushstrokes and textures to portray their whimsical and sometimes enigmatic characters.
“I have always been passionate about animals—especially birds,” Altschuler explains in her artist statement. “They have such a unique energy and spirit about them.” Her acrylic paintings feature portraits of a variety of bird species, including horned owls, barn owls, cardinals, kingfishers, and hummingbirds. Altschuler imbues each subject with kinetic life by paying special attention to the face and—most importantly—the eyes. “I believe the eyes are truly windows to the soul, so capturing them is the most important aspect of my process,” she continues.”
Her careful application of color enhances the individual characteristics of each avian sitter. Additionally, the expressive, abstract background creates a dynamic and mysterious atmosphere around the birds. For example, Altschuler's portrait of a horned owl is surrounded by a pale greenish hue that exudes vivacity, whereas the hummingbird's blue background radiates a sense of calm and happiness.
