Whimsical Bronze Sculptures Turn Airport into Interactive Playground

In collaboration with Hamad International Airport, Qatar Museums has brought the museum experience to the Doha, Qatar airport by installing works by local, regional, and international artists throughout the building. Among the installations is a series of playful bronze sculptures by Tom Otterness, a New York-based artist known for his cheerful figures that pop up in unexpected public spaces. Standing, sitting, tumbling, or curled up on the floor, the towering frames of the bronze characters contain stairs, slides, and hollow spaces that can be explored fully, turning each work into an interactive jungle gym for children and adults alike to enjoy.

“I try to make work that speaks a common language that people understand, a visual language that doesn't intimidate them,” says the artist. By casting each sculpture in the same cartoonish, jolly style, Otterness allows them to communicate universal ideas of fun and play that anyone can understand.
