Explosive Big Bang Theory Installation

Beijing sculptor Zhan Wang just finished up a very impressive installation for the UCAA exhibition hall. Titled My Personal Universe, the piece plunges the viewer in the middle of a giant explosion! It's meant to represent the Big Bang theory, that the universe started from a single point and has been expanding ever since. It shows us that chaos can be, at times, beautiful.

Zhan Wang created this highly immersive experience by first recording the detonation of a massive boulder with six high definition cameras, each capturing a different angle of the blast at 2,000 fps. Next, Wang extended each video into a three-minute long loop that's projected onto the walls of the exhibition hall.

The second part of this installation involves 5,000 stainless steel rocks suspended within the space. These were meticulously arranged to represent the actual fragments of the explosion. This puts the visitor right in the middle of the blast so that they can experience both the videos and a real, physical representation of the detonation.
