Guangzhou, China-based sculptor Hu Shaoming's Dreamland piece is an evocative reflection on nature and humanity expressed through the form of a hybrid seahorse with a golden city sprouting from its head. Dignified and regal in bearing, the iridescent sea creature is almost entirely submerged in water, save for the gleaming metropolis that grows seamlessly from its crown. Created as a part of his City series, the sculpture is not only a stunning display of Hu's craftsmanship, but also the product of his deep consciousness of the manmade environmental problems that wreak havoc on our planet.
“When we face Mother Nature with naive eyes, she looks like a fantastical creature from a fairytale, pure and beautiful, like a dreamland,” the artist explains. “Even though everything appears so beautiful, however, fairytale dreamlands will always shatter. One day Mother Nature will wither away to nothing because of mankind; the Earth will gradually grow older; the fairytale dreams propping up our star-studded cities will also slowly sink, then quietly die. In the hope of raising our awareness of the crisis of protecting nature, here is my latest work–Dreamland.”
